Scientific Grant Consultant

You love science, and you love working with scientists. You’re committed to helping researchers prepare outstanding EU-level grant applications that increase their chances of success, while letting them focus on their important day-to-day work.

But you need a bigger challenge. You’ve been preparing proposals for a couple of years, perhaps in a grant office or as a freelancer. Now, you want a permanent position to develop your leadership skills and take on more responsibility, with tangible business impact. And a change of pace with a focus on quality (not quantity), where you can really get into the details of each project.

This rare opportunity for a grant consultant at a scientific writing and training consultancy could be just what you’re looking for.

Based in the beautiful city of Barcelona—a hub for science research, with a thriving scientific community—this is a newly created leader’s role for a professional with an extremely high level of English.

It’s the chance to take the next step in your career. You’ll manage your own projects, collaborate with other people, and help expand a growing grant consultancy business within a mid-sized company that provides quality services to scientists.

The company and the role

For more than 10 years, Barcelona-based scientific consultancy ThePaperMill has been providing writing, consultancy, and training services for researchers in academia and industry. In recent years, it has grown its grant consultancy business with a focus on competitive calls for basic scientific research.

ThePaperMill - Company and CEO

Job role and responsibilities

  • You’ll be responsible for critically reviewing EU-level grant proposals, helping to clarify scientific projects, and adapting proposals to calls. You’ll also manage the workload and communication for the grants queue, and review and analyse the business’s performance.
  • Your interpersonal skills will come into play. You’ll be in charge of communicating with clients, and building and maintaining good relationships with them. And you’ll work in a collaborative environment with the grants manager, other editors, and workshop trainers.
  • There’ll also be the need to get into the nitty-gritty of growing a company. You’ll develop the grant consultancy and improve its business strategy, and work with the team to design processes, implement best practices, and prepare guidelines. Order and structure are the key words.
  • Beyond consulting on funding programmes and calls, you’ll also help prepare and deliver training workshops on grant writing for researchers. Pairing up with experienced trainers, you’ll share your practical knowledge working with real-world grant applications in a competitive environment.

The successful candidate

  • You know what it takes to deliver high-quality, submission-ready proposals on time.
  • You’ve managed some of your own projects, so you also know how to keep clients happy, collaborate with colleagues, and meet the needs of academic researchers.
  • You’re approachable, yet assertive.
  • You can clearly communicate complex ideas naturally.
  • You might have a PhD in biological or medical sciences, with some postdoctoral research experience. But if you’re from a different scientific field, or you’re a more experienced grant consultant without a PhD, you’ll also be considered as long as you’ve got an excellent track record.
  • If there’s a typo in this text, you’ll spot it. Your attention to detail is second to none, and your standard of written English is extremely high. In fact, you might even have a science-writing qualification or official English language certification, as well as a good level of Spanish and maybe Catalan, too.
  • Your tidy desk says it all. You’re organised, efficient and conscientious. You never miss a deadline, delivering the best quality you possibly can and always looking for ways to improve (as well as helping your teammates to do the same, in a constructive, open way).
  • You work equally well on your own or with others. This is a role in a small company, which means you need to be happy working independently as well as with colleagues when needed. And as the team currently works remotely, with regular face-to-face meetings, you’ll truly get the best of both worlds.

Benefits and rewards

  • You want to keep learning, to develop and progress. It’s one of the reasons you’re looking for a new challenge. You’ll be proactively encouraged and supported in pursuing what you want to achieve, and there’ll be plenty of chances to improve your project management and people skills.
  • By forming part of a team, you’ll have direct access to fellow members’ long experience in scientific writing, grant writing and editing techniques. You can also participate in the company’s training workshops on scientific writing and transferable skills whenever you like.
  • What’s more, by taking part in the grant-writing workshops as an invited speaker or trainer, you’ll receive training in workshop techniques.
  • And, day to day, you’ll see how the principles taught in the leadership and teamwork workshops are put into practice.
  • You’ll also be well looked after. There’s the option of a regular medical check-up, and a good work-life balance is an important part of company culture. So there’s some flexibility in terms of working hours, to be with family or for other commitments you might have.
