ThePaperMill - (Barcelona)
Summary and Goal of this Position
We are small company that provides scientific consultancy services for researchers in Academia and Industry, including scientific writing, grant writing, and training in transferable skills. For more than 10 years, our scientific writing business has been providing critical scientific reading and language review services to help dozens of researchers publish hundreds of papers.
We are now consolidating and expanding this manuscripts business, and we need an experienced scientist and editor to lead this effort. The ideal candidate will be detail-focused and client-conscious. They will also be highly motivated to help us build a consolidated mid-sized company that provides high-quality services to scientists, and pursue our Mission: to change how scientific writing is done and how scientists learn to do it. Our clients are scientists, and the most important thing to us is collaborating closely with them and supporting them in their work - so we want someone who’s also a fan of scientists!
Editing and writing
You will be responsible for critical reading and language review of scientific papers. Initially, you will be the main person responsible for this task, although you will have the support of a team of 5 expert collaborating editors. With time, you will delegate and coordinate more and more of this editing work to other team members.
Managing workload and communication for the manuscript queue
You will be responsible for coordinating our manuscript support service, balancing our workload/schedule (including with other editors), and reviewing/analysing our performance. You will also be responsible for communicating with our clients about their projects, and for building and maintaining good relationships with them.
Development and business strategy
A percentage of your time will be dedicated to working with the rest of the team to improve our business strategy for manuscript support. This may include designing new processes to improve performance, sales and marketing actions, or developing editing guidelines and resources.
PhD in Science
We mostly work in biological and medical sciences, so experience in this area would be a clear advantage. However we will consider candidates from most areas of science, depending on their experience. We will also consider experienced editors who do not have a PhD.
Experience in Scientific Editing
You should have some experience with scientific editing, either in industry, as an independent consultant, or simply as a research scientist who has helped other researchers write/edit their papers. Of course, we also value the experience of applicants who have their own scientific publication record. Ideally, you should also have some experience in managing your own projects and/or supervising others.
Very high level of written English
We require a high level of written English so we can offer our clients a high-quality, submission-ready product. We will value official language certification and any qualifications in medical or scientific writing. As part of the selection process, we will ask you to do a simple editing test.
A good working knowledge of Catalan and Spanish would also be highly desirable.
Team and individual work ethic
We need someone who is motivated to drive quality and constant improvement under their own initiative, but who also values being part of active, collaborative team that looks out for team-mates’ needs and interests. You should be disciplined, well-organised and efficient, and value high quality work and open interpersonal communication, with both colleagues and clients.
Training, Development, and Support
• You will have access to support and training in scientific writing and editing techniques.
• You will also be invited to our training workshops in scientific writing as a participant or invited speaker/trainer, where you will receive training in workshop techniques.
• You will also receive technical training and support and using our business information systems.
• We regularly give training workshops on leadership and team work, and we apply the lessons we teach to our own day-to-day work. As a result, you will have many opportunities to improve your skills on project management, personal effectiveness, and interpersonal communication.
• In general, we have a proactive approach to training, and will encourage you to pursue your own professional development goals.
• Regular medical review.
• You will generally work at our offices at Barcelona Science Park, but we also have a flexible approach to remote work and hours, and we really value a good work-life balance.
